Course content

All units are mandatory except for Unit 

Unit 1: Introduction 

  • An introduction to communication in English 
  • An introduction to English in the sports world 
  • An introduction to understanding regional/accent variants

Unit 2: English phonetics and phonology

  • Exercise for vocal organs
  • Articulation of phonemes: vowels, diphthongs and consonants, including places of articulation and manners of articulation
  • Differentiating approximate equivalent phones of individual learners’ native tongue

Unit  3: English syntax in practice

  • English sentence patterns
  • Units of sentence
  • Intonation in conversation

Unit 4: Parts of words

  • The syllable 
  • Stress and unstress 
  • Contractions, ellipsis in conversation

Unit  5: Football World (Other Options available)

  • Football field
  • Players’ position
  • Cross-section of a football match in terms of language use
  • Referees
  • Football commentary

Unit  6: Language skill – Listening

  • Addressing psychological factors barring the non-native speakers’ listening 
  • Words usually problematic for non-native learners
  • Preparing ear pacing up with listening and understanding
  • Practical exposure including with in-person speakers plus audio-visuals

Unit  7: Language Skill – Speaking

  • Speak out – overcoming psychological inhibition speaking a foreign tongue
  • Interactive conversations
  • Speak out your ideas
  • Speaking exposure – includes the outing programme of Sight-Seeing in and around London

Unit  8: Language skill – Reading

  • Organisation of texts: cohesion, coherence and more
  • Deciphering meaning in context
  • Pacing up reading
  • Reading sports journals

Unit  9: Language skill – Writing

  • Put pen on paper whatever-you-like and organise 
  • Expression and persuasion
  • Written communication
  • Writing sports commentary

Unit 10: Test and Evaluation, and Certification

  • Tests on all language skills – in controlled laboratory settings and external settings
  • Evaluations in compliance with standardised establishments
